Thursday Thirteen for 10/11/07

Thirteen Random Thoughts

  1.  I am feeling so much better than I did last week.  The bronchitis is gone and my strength is back!
  2. So many folks around me are now sick.  Twyla and Jman are both feeling puny just to name a few.
  3. The golf tournament is coming together nicely.  A good friend printed the signs for me, another let me use sign holders, and we have a full field of golfers.
  4. I was hoping to have a free Saturday this week.  Not to be… sigh.  Two commitments, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Double sigh.
  5. Anyone watch the Cowboys on Monday night?  How cool was that?  I still can’t believe it and I feel bad for the Buffalo Bills but hey, the Cowboys are 5-0!
  6. I watched Pushing Daisies.  Cool show.
  7. Ever have a friend who can just call you up and the minute you hear his voice can have you laughing?  Those friends are priceless.
  8. Sat at a banquet last night with some great people.  I loved the speaker’s subject, wind energy, and have to say it was a great to hear an energy company wants to keep pushing wind and solar energy development (planning to spend 10 billion in the next decade on it in Texas alone).  Another great perk, they mentioned my organization twice!  Two plugs in one night!  Excellent!
  9. The holidays are coming up and it is time to make plans.  I am so looking forward to Lohn at Thanksgiving for all kinds of reasons!
  10. TGBO has a birthday in two days.  Wow, they grow up so fast.
  11. My dad has a birthday next week.  He continues to amaze me as he just keeps plugging along despite the lingering effects of West Nile.  I’m glad we get to toast him another year!
  12. I wonder who invented the Slurpee?  Did they do it between the hours of 7 and 11?  The Crystal Light flavors they do are wonderful.
  13. I probably won’t have much time to post for the next few days but knowing me, the urge will overcome me and I’ll put something up.  Some people just like to write to see themselves write.

Happy TT everyone!

Silent Sentinel

We have a homeless man who has been hanging out at the corner of Sayles and S. 1st.  He can usually be seen sitting under a tree that grows in the middle of the divide of the boulevard, munching on food folks have stopped to give him and occasionally you find him having an animated conversation with an unseen adversary who obviously can’t grasp the point that he is making.

Last night as I passed the intersection he was standing in the bar ditch next to the train tracks, staring east, holding his hands outstretched with one hand clenched and the other holding a tall boy.  Never moving.  Never blinking.  Just keeping watch to the east as if he knew there was something vile coming his way and he must be ready to confront it.

Coming back through the intersection an hour later, he was still standing there with his arms crossed on his chest, still holding on to his tall boy, silently watching all points east.

I passed this intersection multiple times today and the silent sentinel is gone.  Did he go east?  Was something/someone calling him in his head?  What had him so concerned and why was the threat coming from the east?  Was he able to conquer it?
